Bronze Camp
Bronze Camp is not only the perfect way to become a fully qualified Surf Life Saver, but it’s also a great way to meet new friends. The week long live-in camp held in December is a fun, challenging way to experience an introduction to Surf Life Saving. It is open for applicants aged 15 years and over and as a Surf Life Saving Victoria pre-requisite a swim of 400m must be completed in 9 minutes.
Although it does require a certain amount of fitness, we encourage all to apply. But please be aware that it is essential that applicants are confident in ocean swimming as a lot of time will be spent in the water daily. The week entails early mornings, strenuous physical activity and challenging theory work.
At the completion of the camp individuals are expected to attend a minimum of 5 – 6 rostered patrols, attend Mountain to Surf and Pier to Pub day. Preference for entry into the camp is given to members that have previously been involved in the nippers or cadets programs.
09/10 Bronze Camp
Hello and welcome to Season 2009-2010
Allow me to introduce myself; I?m Caroline Burton, the Chief Instructor for the Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club. I am organising the live-in Bronze Camp at the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club along with Fleur Griffiths the Assistant Chief Instructor. The camp will be running from Saturday the 12th of December until Sunday the 20th of December.
This year the camp will have 50 full fee paying places available and a number of scholarship funded places, which will be available at the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club (Please see below for details on how to apply for these scholarships). Once all these places are filled there will be no further places available. This season the Bronze Camp will be at a cost of $500 which will include all food, workbooks needed, activities, some patrol uniform and a Bronze Camp t-shirt. This cost does not include membership, key tag access and other patrol uniform costs.
The Camp is instructed by a group of around 15 volunteer instructors. Each instructor will be working in groups of approximately 5 participants (Bronzies) for the duration of the week. Throughout the camp the Bronzies will be learning CPR, basic first aid, anatomy, patient carries, how to perform surf rescues using approved lifesaving equipment, effective communication with the public, how to use the patrol radios and how to be an effective member of a patrol. On the final day of the course an examination will be held, where the skills and knowledge of the participant, which will have been instructed during the camp, will be tested.
The Bronze Camp does require a certain level of fitness, as the Bronzies will be performing strenuous activities for the entire week. The ability to swim is essential as all Bronzies will be spending a large amount of time in the water on a daily basis.
Upon the completion of the camp, all Bronzies are expected to attend their 5-6 rostered patrol dates, plus Mountain to Surf on the 9th of January, Pier to Pub day on the following day and the annual Door Knock fundraiser which is held on New Years day at the club.
Included in the course this year the club is running a course in Crewing the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB). The IRB is the primary rescue craft used in Surf Life Saving throughout Australia today and if used responsibly can be a lot of fun.
The course will include Code of conduct, pre operation checks, equipment checks, launching and crewing positions, patient pick ups, carries, theory work and an examination. The cost of the IRB Crew course is totally subsidised by the club, so there is no additional cost to take part. To take part you must have successfully completed the Bronze examination.
