Lorne Surf Life Saving Club Circle Home

Cadets & Gap Year Program

The 2011-12 season is fast approaching and this year we are looking to get our young members more involved than ever before.
The Cadets program will be run again this year for 13 or 14 year olds who wish to gain their Surf Rescue certificate (SRC). This is the first stage of becoming a lifesaver and consists of an 8 day course starting on the 28th of December and concluding on the 5th January (excluding New Years Day). Candidates will be taught and assessed on performing rescues, identifying dangers, resuscitation, basic emergency care and supervision skills. It is also a great opportunity for kids to meet others their age and experience the many aspects of life saving including patrols, competition and training in a safe and supportive environment. To complete the Surf Rescue Certificate kids must be at least 13 years old by the 5th of January and be able to complete a 200 meter swim in 5 minutes or less.
If you wish to register your child in the SRC program for the coming season, please contact me on the e mail address below and I can book you in.
In addition to the SRC program, junior members who have attained their SRC last year will have the opportunity to participate our new ‘Gap year’ program. This program has been designed to increase retention of 14 year olds in the club who have already completed cadets but are too young, or not ready, to complete Bronze Camp. Gappy’s will receive an activity booklet asking them to complete various aspects of Surf Lifesaving. These activities will be worth a number of points and Gappy’s who attain a total of 100 points will receive a $50 club merchandise voucher. As an introductory offer the program will be run free of charge in season 2011/12. More details about the Gap year program are below.
Please note: To participate in this program kids must have completed the Surf Rescue Certificate last Summer and successfully complete their SRC requalification which they can do at Lorne at 10am on the 27th of November or at Fairhaven at 10am on Dec 28 – if there is enough interest in the Fairhaven requal we will provide a bus.
Our Junior Captain, Chris Manning, will be at the Lorne re-qual to help all the junior members through the assessment.
For the Cadets and Gappy’s who have enjoyed the physical aspect of their program, we are also offering additional run, swim and board training sessions for juniors who would like to get involved in the competition side of lifesaving. A time table of weekly sessions will be displayed in the downstairs hallway of the club. These training sessions will be run from the 28th of December through to the 20th of January.
