Issue 5 | April 09
Dear Club member
Tim Boness
Easter is here and whilst our patrolling wraps up there are still many things on the go.
Well done and thankyou to our Patrol leaders and active members for a great season.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the Surf club at 4.30pm on the afternoon of 18th July 2009. Nominations for the
Committee will be out soon. Our Presentation dinner dance will be held after the AGM. More details to follow.
The General Committee will continue to meet and all members are busily preparing their reports for the Annual Report!!
Right team!
The P2P Committee will in due course reconvene and commence planning for 2010.
In relation to Gordon Briggs who passed away during this year’s event the executive have met with the family and Gordon’s
business partners. They were very appreciative of our efforts and have donated a new IRB in Gordon’s honour. Special
thanks to Peter Atkinson who provided much support to Gordon’s wife, Annie at our meeting. Annie also sent a letter
and card thanking the Club for its effort.
We also received letters of commendation from Mike Martin- President of Life Saving Victoria and from Michael Ponsford
- South West Regional manager.
We have a number of important issues to consider:
- You will see in this edition a Job description for the new Administration manager role. Any members who wish to apply
or know of a suitable candidate should get in early. We already have one application!
- Storage is also a major issue and we are considering a number of options.
- Tristan Read our head coach is on the job. Please have a look in the Coaches Corner on the Web site.
On the competition front we hosted a very successful Master State titles and a full carnival. Hosting the Full carnival
provides all our juniors with a great chance to compete on our home beach. It was a great weekend.
We had a great team at the Nipper State Titles at old Port Melbourne. The kids braved cold conditions, jelly fish and
still had a great time. Well done to all and in particular the under 12 Boys swim team of Morgan Williamson, Dominic
Brew, Matt Smith & Will Sincock who won gold. Back to Lakes Entrance of 2010!
The State and Australian titles provided a few highlights. Well done to Sonia Grundy who is the Australian Masters Board
champion. A great effort!
Our IRB team are in full training with their season commencing soon. Good luck!
Well the year is flying, so stay safe and happy and I wish you all well until next time.
Regards
Tim Boness

As most of us are now aware, we unfortunately lost the life of a loyal Pier to Pub swimmer in January. The work of our water
safety patrol, along with the aid of our beach patrol and professional first aid personnel enabled us to give the swimmer
another chance at life, but he unfortunately passed away some days after the event.
Gordon Briggs’ family has kindly send a thank you card to the club and we have attached it for those who wish to read their
generous thoughts and appreciation for what our people did to help try and save the life of Gordon.
All of us here at the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club share the deepest sympathy with the Briggs family in this tough time.
Please view the card here.

A team of 20 of us went to Scarborough for the Aussies. The maters Comp saw Lorne take home 3 medals!!
Congrats to Sonia
Grundy on her GOLD in the Masters Board Race and followed up later that day with a silver in the Masters Ski race. She
dominated the board race from start to finish and after almost missing the final, Sonia powered home in the ski race to
finish 2nd behind local paddler Ruth Himan.
The Masters Boat crew did a flying visit and in that time scooped up a Bronze. Fantastic effort guys. Swept by Al McCombe
the bronze medal was a fantastic effort.
Well done to Tristan Read 5th in the Masters Swim and 6th in the Masters Ironman Race. Well done to the rest of the Masters
teamon great result - Tim Stanley, Karl Russell and Matt Webb.
The rest of the boat crews arrived early in the week and I am sure Muggo will provide a run down on the mixed results.
All in all a great carnival and everyone was so well behaved!!! Thanks to them I had quite a nice carnival and enjoyed the
racing at Scarborough Beach.
Look forward to next year!

The 67 person Lorne junior team was greeted by the flat, nearly clean water, Spirit of Tasmania, jelly fish and Sandridge
Surf Club for the Junior State Titles.
The word surf has well and truly disappeared from the word Life Saving as the biggest wave of the day came when the big
red boat headed for Tassie.
The spirits of the competitors were high as newly appointed club coach Tristan Read led the group through their warm ups
on both Saturday and Sunday. Our club members preformed admirably with competitors from all age levels, making state finals an effort they can all be proud of.

March Past
Our traditional Vic Titles camping weekend took on a new dimension as team headquarters became Hotel Barkly in picturesque St Kilda. All
went exceptionally well but for the “proposition” to Water Safety Chief, Charles Meredith from a friendly female member of the St Kilda foot patrol.
The 2009 Junior State Titles long be remembered by the performance of U/12s, the jelly fish, the Spirit of Tasmania, the flat water and the working girl!
Thanks to all who participated and helped.

Some mixed results finished the boaties 2008-09 season off this year.
Podium at Scarborough
After a promising state championships, the club took some confidence leading into the Aussies in Perth. Our Masters Men’s
crew of Alistair McCombe, Francis Pamminger, David Love, Alan Cruse and Phil Grant had a fantastic carnival and finished
up with a bronze medal in their masters division. A great result for the boys especially for their first year together.
For the rest of us it was our reserve grade crew who flew the flag for us by reaching the semi finals, just missing out on a
place in the final. Inconsistency and a little bit of bad luck cost our open crews getting through to Saturday.
At the Victorian Championships at Ocean Grove in 3-4 foot choppy conditions, the club achieved the following results:
- Open Mens Surfboat – 2nd Lorne Axemen, 4th Lorne Pocket Rockets
- Open Womens Surfboat – 4th Lorne Lazerettes
- Reserve Grade Mens – 4th Lorne Yahoos
We would also like to extend our congratualtions to Francis Pamminger (Rowdy) who was awarded life membership from the Victorian
Surfboat Rowers League. Rowdy has been an elite and loyal rower with Lorne for many years now and we hope to have him on board
for many years to come.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped out the boat rowers in any fashion this season, we greatly appreciate all the
support we continually receive from members, friends, family and sponsors. We are already looking forward to next season and
bringing home some gold again for Lorne in 2010.
For anyone who wants to row with Lorne or is thinking about getting a crew together, don’t hesitate to give me a call on
0409 963 449, and we’ll organise a time to get together on the water.
See you all at the AGM on the 18th of July at the surf club.

As the patrol season draws to a close, the IRB season is just around the corner. So close you can almost smell the 2-stroke!
The team has put in a lot of hard work over the season, and we welcome many keen new faces to the team this year.
The next training session will be in Lorne on Easter Sunday at 10am. Everyone with an IRB crew or driver certificate is
welcome to come along as we can still make room in our fun-filled team for anyone who’s eager learn more about the art
of high speed rescues.
We are also chasing someone who is willing to become our team manager for the 2009 season. The position comes with an attractive
remuneration package - great company, and a fabulous work environment - the beach, with the opportunity travel. The role is not
without its small hazards, the weather mainly, but nothing a good rain coat can’t fix.
Finally, we are looking for those interested in joining the team as an official. For each male team entered this season, we need to
supply 1 official for the carnival. LSV are running courses in April & May to get you qualified for the role.
So really anyone can join the Lorne IRB team. To be part of this dynamic team in any area, please don’t hesitate to contact either:
Below are the 2009 IRB carnivals dates and venues.
Cheers,
Jimmy

Hi all, who said that Scarborough has no surf!! On arrival the members of the Board and Ski team managed to unload the trailers
and were happy to find all our equipment in one piece. Thanks to all involved in the designing and construction of these racks,
it ensured our equipment arrived safe and sound and on time. Well done and thanks to Tim Stanley, Al McCombe, Neil and Pete VD,
I believe this was a great investment for the club.
On the beautiful 37 degree day, the board and ski team members were ready to blow out the cobwebs from their long flight over.
A one hour training session involved the senior members sharing their Scarborough experiences and was great to experience the
interesting ‘shore break’ that this beach offers.
Conditions wear near perfect with no Fremantle Doctor in sight, and the water was flat as a tack! The only issue was practising
starts and finishes with the huge back shoots running back off the beach and into the ocean. Something that has to be experienced
for yourself, almost like catching a wave off the beach then contending with the oncoming beach break.
The board and ski area had a couple of days to fine tune their skills for the masters competition, but we weren’t prepared
for what the heaven were going to throw at us. We were welcomed to a 4 to 5 foot shore break as well as wind and a massive back
shoot off the beach that would put you in the crunch zone. So it was important to do warm ups to get a feel of what we were in
for and this had great results.
Sonia Grundy once again showed why we call her the big wave specialist taking out the hotly contested board race for her age
group and paddled home hard in the ski race to finish second on her new charger, which handled the conditions perfectly.
Karl Russell, Tim Stanley, Matt Web and I also had some encouraging results. We hope these results can keep the team focused for
the following Summer season with the Aussies returning to Kurrawa. There has been ongoing talk of training sessions over Winter
including Melbourne, Geelong and the Lorne area. Karl Russell has kindly agreed to share his vast surf ski/kayak experience with
any younger member wishing to join the Board and Ski team. Please contact me if interested.
The Boat Area was exciting to watch. Condition saw at least 2 people taken away on spinal boards. Congratulations to the master’s
crew for their flying visit in for a bronze medal in their age group. The trip was well worth the travel and shows that age is no
barrier... Well done.
Tim Stanley stood out in his single ski campaign after his disappointment at the Vic titles making it through to 3 rounds of the
open ski. Tim has been consistent with his training in the off season and this showed with his performances at Scarborough. Well
done again to Sonia Grundy who came 9th in her semi-final and missed a place in the women’s ski final by one place. Age was
no barrier for Sonia, she was one of the last Vic girls left in the women’s ski semis. Mat Web and I teamed up in the double
ski and showed how you can survive on a ski without breaking it.
The boat area was very unlucky over the comps as Mugo will report on later in the Mower. The open crews were both eliminated earlier
than expected in fickle conditions. The reserve crew had fantastic results. As the new coach it was fantastic that the whole team
were able to get together for a team dinner organised by our new Team Manager Bec Read.
This was a great opportunity for us to share our experiences and hopefully organise some combined training sessions over the Winter.
Please keep an eye out on the website for further details of these sessions. I have placed a few programs in the coach’s corner
on the Lorne surf club website for people to refer to as a guide. I am more than happy to discuss other programs for groups and individuals
of all levels.
I am looking forward to doing another coaching course at LSV in April. This covers all disciplines in surf life saving as well as pool
events and IRB. It is now a requirement from LSV to hold this qualification as a coach or Senior / Junior co-ordinator.
I would like to thank the club and all its members for giving the Lorne team the opportunity to compete at the Australian Titles.
Without the help and support from you we would not be able to represent the club at the highest level.
