Dear Club member
|
Welcome to the busy time of our season. After the joys of Christmas we have a very busy month. The Nipper program kicks off after Boxing Day. For two weeks 300 nippers will run through their paces each morning from 10.00am. Thankyou to the Stewarts and all the Nippers coordinators for making this such a great program. The New Year’s Day Annual Door Knock is a compulsory event for all active members. The donations we receive are invested back into vital life saving equipment. The annual Associates night is on Thursday 8th January. Invitations have been sent. The nib Mountain to Surf is on 9th January 2009. We always need members to assist. Camp Quality is kindly providing some volunteers to help out with the drink stations. Richard Knight, our loving Club Captain is the man to speak to if you can help. The nib Pier to Pub swim is on 10 January 2009- once again a compulsory event and the most important day on our calendar. Toms Bars is open in earnest from Boxing Day. Come on down for a coffee, lunch, dinner or a drink. Great food, great service, exceptional company and the best view in town! Well done to our Chief instructor, Caroline Burton and assistant James Carew for running a successful Bronze Camp. The result was 70 members newly trained, accredited and raring to go. Some exciting news is that we have a new Gym. Thanks to the efforts of Virginia Enticott and the generosity of Rick Munday from the Lorne Hotel. The Gym is available to all members 15 and over. Members will need to go through an induction program. It will be open for use from 6am – 9pm daily -absolutely no access outside these hours. (more details further on) Finally, we have a fund raising sponsorship deal with 6J’S Wine Merchants. Through this alliance, the club will receive a rebate of 10% on all purchases of Wine from all members and supporters. Please be assured that they have not received our membership data base. The transaction only occurs if you order wine. (more details further on). I wish you all a happy and safe Festive season and a prosperous New Year. Tim Boness |

Dear Members
I’m writing this from the clubhouse on the morning of our IRB crew exam, following a very successful week of Bronze Camp. Our new Bronzies are a happy, friendly bunch whose enthusiasm knows no bounds. Having witnessed the madness of 60 fifteen year olds all singing and dancing together the other night, I would like to sincerely thank Caroline Burton, James Carew and all of our fantastic instructors for running such a great camp. This was Caroline’s fifth Bronze Camp which I think is an amazing achievement. Whilst I would love her to continue on (as do all of our young Bronzies!) I would certainly understand if she decided to give away the whistle, clipboard and madness for a year at least.
To be honest the turnout for Patrols to date has been a little disappointing. Please remember if you can not make patrol you must:
- Call around to get someone to replace you
- Inform your Patrol Captain
- Make up the patrol hours on another weekend
I have allocated all new Bronzies to patrols which should give us the shot in the arm our patrol attendance really needs. I’d also encourage our Active Reserve to jump on patrol when they are down over the summer break – it’s great to have some of these more senior clubbies around to show the younger guys the way and tell a few old (potentially tall!) stories.
I will be allocating Cadets to patrols following their assessment in January. At this stage we will be aiming to allocate them to patrols on the w/e of 17 & 18th and 24, 25, 26 of January as well as Easter to give them a taste of Surf Lifesaving without burdening their parents too much. However, all cadets are welcome to join a patrol at any time throughout the summer as is the case with all active members.
As we head into the busiest 3 weeks for our club I urge all members to give some of their time for these crucial dates:
- 4:30pm Thursday Jan 1 – Annual Door Knock compulsory for all active members
- 12 noon Fri Jan 9 – Mountain to Surf (compulsory for all 08 Bronze Camp graduates)
- 7am Sat Jan 10 – Pier to Pub compulsory for all active members (please bring wetsuit and patrol uniform)
If for any reason you can’t make one of these crucial club dates can you please give me a call so we can try to make alternate arrangements.
There are also some great training initiatives coming up for IRB Drivers/Crew and Advanced Resuscitation – I encourage all members to improve their life saving skills and get these awards where possible (see info under Chief Instructor’s section).
Best wishes for the Christmas season and I look forward to seeing you on the beach
Merry Christmas

Hi to all,
We now have more than 60% of our members who have paid their membership fees and returned their Membership Application Forms for the 2008 - 2009 season.
As the summer is fast approaching it is very important that the members who are not yet financial pay their fees and return their Membership Forms as soon as possible, so that key-tags can be reactivated. This will avoid the rush over the Christmas period.
REQUALIFICATION Sunday Nov 30th: I would like to remind Active members that they must be financial and have completed the Membership Form PRIOR to requalification.
A credit card payment slip is attached if required. Also, if you need replacement Membership Application Forms please contact me.

Gym facility for Lorne SLSC sponsored by The Lorne Hotel
I am very pleased to announce that The Lorne Hotel has sponsored a gym facility for members of the Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club to be located in the Alan & Glenys Clissold Room formally known as the patrol room.
The gym is being installed before Christmas and will be available for all members of the club 15 years and over.
There will be no additional charge to use the gym it will be part of your surf club membership. All members must be financial.
The Lorne Hotel, aware of the fact that there currently is no formal gym facility in Lorne happily came on board to provide this training facility for us.
Please ensure you support the Lorne Hotel and inform members of the community of their generosity.
For members wishing to use the equipment a waiver form and a formal induction to the equipment must be completed prior.
It will be open for use from 6am – 9pm daily.
The gym will be officially opened on Associates Night, Thursday 8 January 2009.
Please contact Virginia Enticott ph 0417 546 169 for further information.
The Lorne surfboat rowers have competed in 3 events since last report; Bancoora, Anglesea and Torquay. Only some mixed results so far, 2nds and 3rds. In open men Jan Juc will be the crew to catch and in reserve men it is Anglesea, it shows we all have plenty hard work to do if we want to get in front before seasons end.
Thanks to everyone who helped out with golf day.
Come Down and check out the surfboat racing on the morning of P2P, Bring your black and white pom poms and cheer for the Lorne boaties, racing 8-11am.
Hope you all have a great Christmas, see you all in the new year!

Lorne Orcas - IRB Racing Introductory Training Day
Sun Feb 8th at 1pm
Have you ever wanted to race IRBs? It’s fun, fast, challenging and a great team environment for both boys and girls.
With some major retirements there are now new opportunities to crew, drive or patient. We are also looking to develop new crews wherever possible in order to hand over to the next generation of Orcas.
It’s a great team environment and with two interstate trips this year (including the Aussies on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland in July!! HELLO!!). There is a lot of fun to be had doing road trips around the countryside, renting housing at different beaches and winning medals.
And parents please note that most of the transport to and from carnivals/training is taken care of by the senior members of the team.
For more information please contact James Carew on 0439 833 809 or Scot Kerr on 0407 438 734 or just turn up on the day.

Another successful Lorne SLSC Golf Day was run on the 29th of November. Special thanks to Virginia Enticott and Frank Veltman for all their hard work in organising everything for the day, much appreciated.
A beautiful day provided almost perfect conditions for all competitors, it was just a pity the clubhouse wasn’t seeing ‘perfect’ golf swings as groups waddled up the 9th hole to finish their rounds!
The Wilmot brothers’ team once again proved too strong for everyone, comfortably taking out the coveted trophy ahead of one of the boatie teams. Thanks to all the competitors who played and helped out with running the day, especially Muggo and the Yahoos who ran the bar on the 5th hole.
Also big thanks to all other club members, sponsors and partners that helped make it an enjoyable day, and the Lorne Country Club for their continued support.

We are pleased to say that all patrolling members can now view the clubs patrol dates and rosters on the Lorne SLSC’s website.
With the help of Mark Williamson and the use of Google Docs, we’ve been able to create a file that can be easily viewed by all active members.
This will become an important tool for members who need to check the dates they are required to patrol and also source contact information if needed to find a substitute for a date in which you can not be present.
To access this password protected, members only section, please follow the steps below:
- Visit the clubs homepage at http://www.lornesurfclub.com.au
- Click on the “Members Home” link which is the 4th category on the main menu at the top left hand side of the page, then click on the sub heading under this section called “Patrol Roster”
You will then be prompted to enter a password. At present all active members have the same following username and password.
- Username: members
- Password: lornez12-
Please note that the hyphen (-) at the end of ‘lornez12’ is essential
Once the correct username and password have been entered you will be able to access a spreadsheet with multiple tabs regarding all our patrols
As we move forward we hope to build on this type of structure so that updating and allocating new members’ information becomes quicker and easier.
If anyone has any trouble logging onto this section of the clubs website, please contact your patrol captain to rectify the problem.
