Dear Club member

President’s Report

Well, what a fabulous and busy period for the club. Thankyou to everyone who played a part. Whilst we still have duties to fulfil I think we can at least catch our breathe. We are all lucky to be members of such a vibrant and friendly Club.

The Nipper program kicked off after Boxing Day. Thanks to Ian Stewart’s leadership and all the group leaders, the program was again an outstanding success. Special thanks to the Cadets who helped the group leaders with much enthusiasm. We didn’t beat Fairhaven (again) in the annual challenge but our kids and parents went about it in the right fashion and had a great time. Good luck to all the Nippers competing in the State Tiles at old Port Melbourne.

We also had a cadet program completed during this period resulting in over 30 new members being inducted into the Club.

The biggest challenge is to provide a formal path into the club for the Nippers and cadets. To assist in this process I am pleased to formally announce that Tristan Read has been appointed head coach. He will provide coaching skills to all areas of the club and work with the competition committee to devise programs and strategies to benefit the competition area.

The New Year’s Day Annual Door Knock was again a very successful event. Thankyou to Karl Russell and his team of helpers who did a great job.

Virginia Enticott again organised a fantastic Associates night. We had record number of attendees who enjoyed a very funny opening of the Lorne Hotel Gymnasium by VFL legend Neil Roberts. Thanks again to Rick Munday. The Gym in the Clissold room is available to all members 15 and over. We also had an auction for the Number 1 P2P ticket and a print of this year's T Shirt which was very successful.

The nib Mountain to Surf was run in great conditions. All the hours put into the new heat policy were put on reserve as the mild weather caused few issues. Sarah McCarthy, James Galbraith and Roger Brayshaw must be thanked for their efforts on the day and throughout the year. Richard Knight and Ben Brockhurst were great leaders throughout the weekend. We also had 20 Camp Quality volunteers assist with the water stations. Hopefully we can form a long lasting and mutually rewarding association with them in a similar manner to our long time partners, Highton Rotary.

The nib Pier to Pub swim was our best ever. The P2P committee lead by Mark Williamson put on a great show. It really is a marque event for the surf coast.

Gordon Briggs who had competed in 10 P2Ps passed away during this year’s event. A marvellous effort was put into rescuing Gordon by our life savers and then an even greater effort by our medical team, who successfully resuscitated Gordon. Sadly Gordon passed way a week later in the Geelong Hospital. We should all be extremely proud of our life savers and medical team.

Good luck to all our competitors in the coming weeks and best wishes for the Year.

Regards

Tim Boness

Club Captain’s Report

Dear Members

A big thank you to all Active Members who have helped out around the club (both on and off the beach) during our peak season. However, with our last patrol not until April 13 there is still plenty of the season left. It only seems like yesterday that I was writing my December report in the club house just after Bronze Camp. It’s been enjoyable, eventful and on the whole very successful.

I enjoyed a few days providing water safety in the IRB for the Nippers this year and I must congratulate Ian Stewart and all of his helpers who put on such a wonderfully run program for so many kids. It would be good to see more active members lend a hand to this great initiative.

Tristan Read did a great job with Cadets with assistance from Caroline Burton and a whole host of new Bronzies who did a great job as instructors. This was the first of many club activities which are current crop of Bronzies really grabbed hold of. I’m very impressed with their enthusiastic attitude and I look forward to their involvement at the club for many years to come.

New Years Eve and Associates Night provided me with a great opportunity to meet a whole host of current and former greats of the club. I really enjoy these nights when we all get to relax a little and reflect on some of the funnier moments around the club o ver the years. Neil Roberts’ address was definitely a highlight.

Mountain to Surf and Pier to Pub were certainly a bit daunting from my perspective - it’s one thing to run an area on Pier to Pub day but pulling together all the volunteer areas was certainly a challenge. However, I thought the events ran really well and all our volunteers did a great job. I would particularly like to single out Lincoln Wymer and Ben Brockhurst who were towers of strength and support for me over the three days – thanks guys.

As usual the Boaties did a great job in organising the marshalling and set up of the Mountain to Surf. Special thanks to Drew Steven who put a lot of organisational work in beforehand which helped the event run a lot more smoothly than previous years. Thanks to Muggo and Jared for putting up with me trying to over-organise– I think the idea of being ready for M2S by 2pm was foreign to everyone!

Lee First wins nib Lorne Mountain to Surf

As you may know we had a significant life saving emergency on Pier to Pub day. Whilst the result was very unfortunate, with Gordon Briggs eventually passing away a week later, I was very pleased with the way that our lifesavers in the water and on the beach handled the emergency. Special mentions to Brent Enticott, Will Saunders, Stephen Snelson and James Rice.

In late January and early February we conducted a number of training weekends which culminated in a total of 42 awards being completed in Advanced Resuscitation, Spinal Management, IRB Drivers and IRB crew. Many thanks to James Carew for putting in an extraordinary amount of work in organising these weekends and getting the assessments completed. We’ve had a huge focus on upskilling this season and I think it’s something we should continue – it’s not until we have a real emergency like on P2P day that we realise just how important it is to improve our skill base – atleast 4 of the guys involved in that emergency were Gold Medallion holders, which is the level that all young lifesavers should aspire to.

I’m looking forward to the next 8 weeks of patrols when Lorne is still nice and warm but a bit quieter and more peaceful. That’s not to say that we should relax our patrolling efforts however. Please ensure you attend your patrols as rostered and if you have any queries about this please contact your Patrol Captain or myself. Besides, spending a day or two on patrol can actually be a great break from the rat race!

Take care and see you on the beach

Pier to Pub Letter

Dear Sir,

Once again I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped me throughout the day as I had organised parking again with Mark to bring my car into the car-park for the amount of ease from signing in, then off to the Trouble-shooters tent, where Mark had arranged with Phil the driver that he would be picking up a water wheelchair and myself and my volunteers to help me into the water and also swim with me.

Once again your volunteers helped me get down the steep embankment and out to the start line so I could float off my wheelchair and start my race.

Thank you to the water patrol for keeping the sharks at bay.

I was most impressed again with your water wheelchair at the end of the race, but one small improvement I could recommend is having the step fold back into the chair as it is a long way to reach the seat as I ended up sitting on the step first then had to make my way to the seat because it it’s just that far back to reach the seat.

The accessible showers were clean and tidy as I did not have to remind any people that I wanted to use it. It was so thoughtful that one volunteer gave me the money to put in the slot and I can’t thank her enough as she was one of your club-members. These are your young members that will grow into older members that will make this club and swim stronger and even more inspiring as I know that Jose doesn’t still sit in the background as she is still involved in the club.

I will be back again next year, hopefully, earning more points for my Shark bait.

Mark Thompson

“We have already had members of the Lorne Community join the Surf Club because of the gym, which is just fantastic”.

Rick Munday of The Lorne Hotel aware of the fact there had not been an accessible gym in the town for the Community was enthusiastic to make it happen when approached by the Surf Club.

The gym is open daily from 6am-9pm all year round.

Board and Ski Report

There has been a lot of action happening over the summer in our section.

Training sessions have been well attended with over 30 juniors having a go over Xmas p2p period. We now have a core group of very capable juniors coming through our ranks with a promising group coming out of nippers next year.

BoardandSkiA
Tim Boness, Peter Williamson and Tristan Read. Lorne Masters

The Anglesea Fairhaven and Lorne carnivals were well attended with some great results but even more importantly lots of fun has been had by all. The conditions at Fairhaven were extremely challenging however it was great to see that the training over summer has paid off for our kids Everyone is looking forward to the state titles at Ocean Grove on the 28th Feb. & 1st Mar.

We had another successful day at the master’s carnival. Our swimmers put in some great performances. Though I think we must be all getting a bit older as there we some sore bodies on the beach on Sunday.

Now for some house keeping!!

We all love the G boards but!!! They must be looked after correctly. They have there own rack for the 10 boards and must be washed and put back after use. They are not to be kept on the beach with you all day or lent to non members.

BoardandSkiB
Sonia Grundy Lorne Masters

Boards have been left on the beach at night on numerous occasions which caused them to be locked away for 3 days over the busy Xmas period.

Our shed is having some alterations in a month’s time.

All non competition craft must be removed by the 29th March 09 or it will be donated to the bush fire appeal.

If you have any question regarding this please contact myself

See you in the water!

Boat Captain's Report

Lorne surfboat rowers have enjoyed a busy month in January and first half of February.

It all kicked off with the Victorian Surf Rowers League Open on the morning of the P2P, great turnout with 60 crews entered, things ran smoothly and finished up at 11am. Always a tough day after P2P for the Lorne boat rowers is the Anglesea carnival, a few of the rowers holding up tom’s bar Saturday night struggled getting through the day.

Lorne A traveled to Sydney for the Australia day weekend at Manly and Freshwater, coming home with a great result finshing 5th in the open men final at Freshwater, great work boys.

Fairhaven turned on some messy but fun 4-6 foot waves on 1st Feb, spectators enjoying the day with a few spectacular spills, Pocket Rockets finishing 2nd in Open Mens final.

On the same weekend Al’s Lorne A made the trip over to Piha in NZ, Pete Van Dueren traveled over with the boys, see his report for the details in this edition of the mower.

Australian Surf Rowers League Open was held in a beautiful spot Broulee, 20min south of Batemans Bay, Lorne A, Pocket Rockets, Yahoos, Lazerettes, Woftams made the trip north for the weekend. All crews performing well and getting through round robin, but all going down in 4th round.

Masters state titles held at Lorne 14th Feb with one crew in the Woftams representing the club in the 220 age group, coming home with the bronze medal, well done boys.

Lorne then hosting its first full carnival for a number of years, with a fantastic performance by Lorne A to win the open men’s race, great work by Al and his crew of Jarrod + Brent McCombe, Drew Stevens and Ben Ross.

Getting down to the business end of the season now with State titles on the 28th Feb/1st March at Ocean Grove, then heading over to Perth for the last time 19-22nd March, come down and show some support for your club at hopefully have some good results to report in the next mower.

New Zealand Trip

Alistair’s Open Mens crew along with Pete Van Dueren, Virginia Van Dueren, Gail McCombe, Grace Duffield and Chester McCombe ventured over to Piha, New Zealand for 2 events; The Day of Giants and Piha Big Wave Classic, in late January.

Piha provided a picturesque setting for a couple of quality days of racing in 6-8 feet surf. The boys finished 5th at the Day of Giants (Australia vs New Zealand) and made the semi finals at the Big Wave Classic (full NZ carnival).

With a couple of spare days before and after the event it was good to do some sailing in a couple of 1994 America’s Cup yachts and also visit some of New Zealand’s famous beaches and national parks.

It was a great 5 days spent and we look forward to returning again next year.
