Dear Club member

President’s Report

Welcome to the winter edition of the mower.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the Surf club at 4.30 pm on the afternoon of 18th July 2009. Please consider the many rewarding positions available on the committee. Our Secretary, Brad Cook will be sending out the required notices and nomination forms in due course.

The Life members met on the 10 June 09 in Carlton. The Life members considered a number of nominations and I am pleased to report that the following nominations will be voted on at the AGM:

  • Josie Molloy
  • Peter Williamson

Financial members who hold their Bronze Medallion are entitled to vote on the Life Members nominees. The nominees require a two thirds majority to be elected. So if you support these nominees you should make every attempt be paid up and to be at the AGM.

Our Presentation dinner dance will be held after the AGM. The night is always great fun so book in early.

The general committee held its final meeting in May and enjoyed a meal at the Lorne Hotel as a reward for the diligence and service over the last 12 months.

The Pier to Pub Committee reconvened in May to start the planning process for next season’s events.

We are about to appoint an Administration officer. The sub committee of Barry Leek, Phil Walsh, Mark Williamson and I met some great candidates and an announcement will be forthcoming shortly. The Administration officer will undertake a range of duties and report directly to the Executive Committee.

The IRB team has taken possession of 2 new boats. One was very generously donated by Graham & Sue Rice, Ian Mence and Stewart Stribling. Thankyou for your generosity. The other was donated by the family and business partners of the late Gordon Briggs. The team are in the middle of their competition season and are flying!

I hope to see many of you at the AGM. Have a safe and happy Winter. May there be lots of snow and may it rain goals for your team; unless it’s against my team!

Regards

Tim Boness

Club Captain's Report

Dear Members

Many thanks for your help throughout the season. It was a great summer for us from a patrol, competition and events perspective. Before we look forward to next season, I think it is really important that we take a chance to reflect on all the great achievements of 2008-09….and the best way to do this is to come along to the AGM Dinner!

The AGM Dinner this year is at the Clubhouse in Lorne on Sat July 18 at 7pm. It’s always a great night and is a fantastic opportunity to catch up with all your old mates from summer/Lorne. It’s also a great chance for us to recognise some of the fantastic efforts of our volunteers and competitors throughout the year.

The event is open to Junior and Senior members – basically all are welcome. There will be a three course dinner with drinks provided and a DJ for some dance floor action later on (that’s right – this year we’re actually hiring a dance floor!). Obviously the bunkrooms will be open to members that night wishing to stay – I am currently in the process of organising heaters!

Hopefully your Patrol Captains have been calling you to arrange a table, if not please give me a call on 0400 938 707 if you are interested in coming – I’ll look after you and make sure you’re on a good table. Cost is $70 for adults and $40 for juniors.

Obviously the Annual General Meeting itself precedes the evening’s frivolities at 4:30pm. This is where the new committee is voted in for the next season. If you are interested in standing for a position and contributing to the club in some way, please give me a call to discuss – particularly juniors who want to have more say in the running of their surf club or those whose lives have settled down a bit post uni etc and are looking for a way to further develop their skills. Either way it looks great on your resume and is a fantastic way to stay involved with the club – in fact it’s the engine room of the club in many ways.

I look forward to hearing from you or seeing you on July 18

Go Orcas!

Mandatory Requirement for all Active Club Members

Please be reminded that all active club members must have applied, or already possess, a “Working With Childrens Check” by June 30th, 2009.

This is a mandatory requirement set out by Life Saving Victoria and although most of our patrolling members have already got their Working With Children Checks out of the way, we still have a large number that have not.

If you do not have your Working With Children Check submitted by June 30, 2009 you may be excluded from staying in the club bunkrooms and also attending patrols as the Working with Children Check is a LSV requirement to participate in patrols and also stay at the club.

Working With Children Check application forms can be picked up from any Australia Post branch.

Training Sessions

Below is the start of a new era… a structured off season training for the Lorne SLSC. I am hoping to provide training programs for all competitors to improve their fitness and performance for season 2010. All sessions are designed for an “off season” training phase with a strong emphasis on gaining a good fitness base with focus on aerobic fitness and strength training. These sessions are open to all competitors, so please make the effort to attend these where possible. Our club has supported both individuals and teams to compete at the highest levels, so let’s return the favour and be fit and strong and represent our club at all carnivals and National championships.

My main goal as the Lorne Coach is to provide all athletes the opportunity to achieve their goals for the coming season and beyond. We are starting a new phase within the club, and what a great opportunity we have to improve our performances, as well as encouraging our up and coming junior athletes.

All competitors have the opportunity to use the new GYM at our club which is located in the old patrol room and has been sponsored by the Lorne Hotel. Please make the most of this. Neil Morarty has purchased 2 ergo rowing machines that will be in place in the GYM in coming weeks.

LSLSC Lorne Hotel Gym News

As expected the Lorne Hotel Gym has been extremely popular with all members.

I am pleased to announce the vision I had for the gym is nearly complete, we now have 2 reconditioned concept 2 rowers.

They are stored vertically and are easily lowered for use.

Please remember all members are required to sign in each time they use the facility. We also ask that you take the time to sweep and wipe down the equipment after use.

It?s our gym and we need to look after it!

Members are not permitted to encourage non-members to use the gym, this poses a liability risk on the club and members found doing so may face suspension. No exceptions.

All equipment is to remain inside the gym.

If anyone would like a hand getting started in the gym feel free to give me a call, always happy to help!

For the junior carnivals, Dolphin Boards have kindly donated a foamie board for the following:

  1. Most juniors entered into junior pool carnivals throughout the 2009 season

Specials at 6J’s Wine Merchants

6jsThe growth in popularity of this wine style is staggering. Last year a Nielson poll found that sales of Pinot Grigio / Gris grew by 81% in the $8-11 bottled wine segment, from the year before. This means there's a hell of a lot of people looking for an alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. And why not, cause at it's best its a great drink!

Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape variety. The difference is that Grigio is Italian for grey and refers to wine that is made lighter and dryer whilst Pinot Gris is French for grey and refers to wine that is made fuller, with heady aromas and sweeter fruit.

There's no need to go into an in depth explanation about Pinot Noir. We all know it and have seen on the wine shelves and wine lists for ages. One of the more noticeable things about is that it is rarely cheap. The grape variety is very site specific; it's hard to get right in the vineyard and hard to work within the winery. And for this reason its price is hardly ever friendly.

$10 Pinot Noir's don't grow on trees, and especially ones from cool climate Victorian regions.

Nine Red Ducks King Valley Pinot Grigio 2008

Don't Pay $15 6J's Price $9
Eagle Point Geelong Pinot Noir 2008
Don't Pay $16 6J's Price $10

For all 6J’s specials, please visit www.6js.com.au and don’t forget to mention your from the Lorne SLSC because 5% of each sale goes back into the club.
