Dear Club member
|
Welcome to this edition of the Lorne Mower. The new committee has settled in and is hard at work. Well done to our essential services leaders; Richard Knight, Will Saunders, James Carew and Andrew Griffiths on a very successful gear inspection. We are now prepared for the season! We still require a Team Manager, Radio officer and Swimming captain. A reminder that Working with Children Checks are now compulsory for all patrolling members and any members taking bronze squads, nipper squad and staying in the bunkroom. Just go to your local Post Office and complete the form. You need to nominate Life Saving Victoria as the primary organisation. - 200 The Boulevard Port Melbourne VIC 3207 Don’t forget the opening of the season with the annual Golf Day on Saturday 29 November (see attached flier). Requal is on the Sunday. The Golf Day is a fund raising event for the competitors and competition subsidies are partly based on attendance for all competitors. Thanks to Mark Williamson the nib Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf entry and ballot system went extremely well. The ballot system is in place and working very well. Well done Mark. We simply couldn’t achieve the entries without Mark’s skills and efforts. We are co branding the nib P2P with Camp Quality. Camp Quality is a non profit organisation that is committed to bringing hope and happiness to every child living with cancer, their families and communities through ongoing quality recreational, educational, hospital and financial support programs. The swim is on 10 January 2009 and is a compulsory event for all members. We require everyone’s support to keep the event at the top of the open water calendar. The Mountain to Surf has Steve Moneghetti back as the Run ambassador. We greatly appreciate the Associates efforts with M2S and continue to need your help for this year. The annual Associates night is on again on Thursday 8th January. Look out for your invitations. Our thoughts and prayers go to Ella Bunn and her parents Jamie and Sophie, as she fights and recovers from brain tumour surgery. Merry Christmas to you all and See you soon on the beach Cheers Tim Boness |

Greetings Lorne members
Isn’t it wonderful that summer is nearly here! I’ve been spending a number of weekends at Lorne recently and it’s been great to enjoy some warmer weather
Inside this edition of the Mower there is some really important information about the upcoming season so make sure you print it off for easy reference. We have a long patrolling season coming up (with Easter Monday being quite late) so we’re going to need your best efforts over the coming months.
I met with the Patrol Captains in early October to select patrol dates and discuss the upcoming season. For those that have never attended one of these meetings it’s basically a cross between the AFL draft and some sort of horse trade – with everyone avoiding the dreaded New Years Day patrol. However the night went quite smoothly (thanks to a steady supply of beer and pizza) with most Patrol Captains happy enough with the dates they ended up with. Please take time to look closely at the Patrol Roster included in this Mower and lock in your patrol dates now.
This year we are also endeavouring to have the Roster easily available on our website for your reference all year round.
If for some reason you are unable to make your patrol you must:
Call your Patrol Captain (a Facebook message is not sufficient!)
Find someone to swap with/cover you
Ensure you make up the hours on another patrol day and inform that Patrol Captain that you will be attending their patrol
If you have any concerns with the above procedure please let me know. If for some reason your name does not appear on the roster please give me a call.
I’ve recently had the unpleasant task of sending letters to members who did not adequately complete their minimum patrol requirements last year and will not be invited back to the Club. It is an unfortunate yet necessary part of ensuring that we continue to field a competent, reliable lifesaving service to carry out our mission – to provide a safe swimming environment for all those that choose to swim at Lorne.
As most of you would know each year we need to requalify as active lifesavers. The following dates/locations are available for you to requalify:
| Location | Date | Awards being requalified |
|---|---|---|
| Apollo Bay | Saturday 29th November 11am | BM, SRC, ARC, IRBD, IRBC, SM |
| Lorne | Sunday 30th November 10am | BM, SRC, ARC, IRBD, IRBC, SM, DEFIB |
| Fairhaven | Saturday 6th December 11am | BM, SRC, ARC |
| Wye River | Saturday 27th December 11am | BM, SRC, ARC, IRBD, IRBC, DEFIB |
| South Melbourne | Wed 17 Dec 5:30pm | (pre registration available on LSV website under Education & Courses>Training Courses>Club Training BM, SRC |
Please ensure that you have requalified by Dec 31 – if you do not requalify by this time you will be unable to be an active member of the club this season.
Try and requalify at Lorne if you can – the last weekend in Nov is a great weekend to get together. Particularly if you come along to Golf Day on the Saturday ,which is a very relaxing day/night up at the Golf Club (the 2nd best view in Lorne!). Feel free to bring friends and family along to Golf Day – all proceeds go to supporting our competitors in their endeavours for the mighty black and white.
The Patrol Competition will be in full swing again this year so I urge you to ensure you have the correct patrol gear and be up to date with your knowledge.
Last year’s winners, Patrol 4, are currently being fitted out with FREE wetsuits for their efforts. We will be incorporating Working with Children
cards into this year’s patrol competition, so please ensure you bring this card to patrol. Every active member over 18 must have one of these cards
– they are free and available at Post Offices. Very soon it will be a legal requirement for all active adult members to have these cards, so you should
get used to bringing them to patrol. By next season anyone who doesn’t have a Working with children card will be unable to be an Active Member of
the club.
On a lighter note I’d like to thank Caroline Burton and James Carew who did a great job holding two training weekends over the spring to bolster our stocks of Advanced Resus, Defib, Spinal Management and IRB crew certificate holders. We are planning more training weekends in Jan and Feb so stay tuned. Caz and James are currently busy organising our December Bronze Camp which continues to go from strength to strength and Caz is also running a mature age Bronze course in Melbourne on Tues and Thursday nights, with the help of Andrew Griffiths.
Each year at around this time Life Saving Victoria inspects all Lifesaving equipment used on patrol at the club. I’m pleased to say that thanks to the great work of James Carew, Andrew Griffiths and Will Saunders we passed this inspection with flying colours. Please take care when using our patrol gear though – the number of avoidable repairs and replacements was a bit disappointing – especially when you’re as challenged as I am at trying to fix this sort of thing! To that end I must thank Greg Saunders for his excellent help in the last week before gear inspection – I can assure you Greg, it was very much appreciated.
‘Safety First’ is something that you will hear a lot more about this season. It’s a new initiative from Surf Life Saving Australia which is all about creating safer surf clubs. In the past I think there has been a tendency to be a little flippant about safety in the surf club environment but it’s time we fell in line with rest of the community and treated this issue seriously. Each of you should be receiving a brochure about your rights and obligations regarding safety when on patrol at the club. I urge you to read this and to speak with your Patrol Captain or myself if you have any concerns about safety within the club.
I know this has been a long rant but there’s a lot going on. Don’t forget the other crucial dates for the Club this season:
- Thu Jan 1 Door Knock – 4:30pm. Compulsory for all active members
- Fri Jan 9 Mountain to Surf – All 08 Bronze camp graduates required from 2pm plus any other volunteers
- Sat Jan 10 Pier To Pub 7am – Compulsory for all active members
I look forward to seeing you on the beach. If you’d like a chat about anything above please give me a call
Cheers
Richard Knight

Hi to all,
We now have more than 60% of our members who have paid their membership fees and returned their Membership Application Forms for the 2008 - 2009 season.
As the summer is fast approaching it is very important that the members who are not yet financial pay their fees and return their Membership Forms as soon as possible, so that key-tags can be reactivated. This will avoid the rush over the Christmas period.
REQUALIFICATION Sunday Nov 30th: I would like to remind Active members that they must be financial and have completed the Membership Form PRIOR to requalification.
A credit card payment slip is attached if required. Also, if you need replacement Membership Application Forms please contact me.
Regards,
Barry Leek

A Big welcome to all our new surfboat rowers for the 08/09 season, we have a brand new U/19 crew and some new additions to our open women’s crew, also welcome back two masters in; David Love and Phil Grant who have been rowing for another club the last few years, great to have these two men back in the Black and white sluggos.
Currently we have 6 crews representing the club this season:
- Open Men: Lorne A, Pocket Rockets
- Open Women: Laserettes
- Reserve Men: Yahoos
- U/19 Men: Young pups

As the season is nearly upon us we are getting fired up to commence regular training for ALL members interested in paddling a ski or board.
Sessions at this stage will be Sunday mornings from 7:30am, they will commence on Sunday 16th November and will increase to other times on demand. Please contact myself, Brent Enticott ph 0438 892 988 or Tristan Read ph 0417 885 058 and let us know if you intend to come prior.
With regard to use of equipment any club member wishing to use the G Boards or the plastic skis it is now mandatory to be wearing club gear (bathers, rash vest or competition cap) when in the water. We found last season a number of non-club members using the equipment.
All fibreglass equipment (boards and skis) require verbal permission from myself to use.
We are keen to encourage anyone who may be interested to come and have a try if you've never paddled.
Hope to see you on the beach

Season 2008-09 is just around the corner and that means Requal day is almost upon us.
I’d just like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to re-familiarise themselves with the first aid room and first aid equipment. It’s very easy to forget where things are and how things work so feel free to contact me should you have any queries.
It has also come to my attention that a number of items have started appearing in my first aid and recovery rooms that clearly do not belong. Please understand that the first aid area is NOT a storage area or dumping ground.
Unless you’ve run it past me first I’ll be disposing of any items that do not belong or have not been approved by ME. A gold star goes to each member that looks after the first aid room this season… A big kick in the pants goes to those who don’t!
Good luck to everyone on Requal day and I look forward to seeing you all on the beach this coming season.

As the birth place of the Anaconda Adventure Race National Series and now the series finale there is always a feeling of homecoming and loaded lunacy as competitors race along the spectacular Great Ocean Road coastline and Otway Forest in an offroad adventure with a bang. ??It does not get any better than this as individuals and teams take up the challenge that sees them swimming across the crystal clear Loutit Bay, paddling beneath the cliffs and into the golden beaches of the Great Ocean Road; running through rainforests and around the rocky headlands and mountain biking up secret single track and down rollicking descents. ??Combine all this with an adventure expo and kids entertainment on the scenic Lorne foreshore allowing families and friends to watch finishers propel themselves over the finish line, and then catch some free entertainment and share a drink at the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club afterwards.
For details regarding entries, please visit www.anacondaadventurerace.com
This year also marks the first year of the Anaconda Junior Survivor, which is a shortened version of the adult race for children aged 13 years and under.
Please see Anaconda Junior Survivor Flyer (attached), along with the Junior Survivor Course Map.
