Dear Club member
|
Welcome to this edition of the Lorne Mower. Summer is rapidly approaching and as always this season promises to be bigger than ever. The new committee has been formed following another marvellous AGM at the Clubhouse. Thank you to Virginia Enticott and her team for all their efforts in organising and setting up for the AGM and Presentation night. The Annual report was again a very professional report. Thank you to Michelle Edwards for her work in putting it all together. Major apologies to Tristan Read. His Junior report was accidentally left out of the Annual report. The Junior / Nipper section is in my opinion the most important part of the Club, so we have produced his report in this edition. Sorry once again. It was great to see many of the past committee re nominating. We welcome to the committee Will Saunders who has taken on the Gear Stewards role. Other changes include:
We still require a Team Manager for the carnivals, radio officer and Water area captain. Planning for the NIB Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf is well underway. The event co-ordinator Mark Williamson reports that a ballot will be in place for this year’s event. The swim is on 10 January 2009 and is a compulsory event for all members. We require everyone’s support to keep the event at the top of the open water calendar. Mark also welcomes Vinnie Sheehan onto the Special events Sub Committee. As a partner at Ernst and Young Vinnie has already provided some great input. Roger Brayshaw reports that the Mountain to Surf planning process is well underway. After trailing a new heat policy last year, some minor changes will be implemented for this year’s race. Nicole Roache, our sponsorship guru is pleased to report a new deal is on the table with NIB, our major sponsor. Great news! With the Patrolling season kicking off on the last weekend of November we have the annual Golf Day on Saturday 29 November (see attached flier). Requal is on the Sunday. The Golf Day is a fund raising event for the competitors and competition subsidies are partly based on attendance for all competitors. In February 2009 we again have the Masters State Titles on Saturday 14th followed by a full carnival on the Sunday. This will be a great opportunity for our young competitors to compete at State level on our home beach. Good luck to every one in the lead up to to the season in all that you do. See you soon and regards Cheers Tim Boness |

Hello all and welcome to season 2008/09
As many of you will know by now I have taken over from Lincoln and am very proud to be the new Captain of the Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club. I’ve been around the surf club for almost as long as I can remember – I think I started doing nippers in 1982 and have been patrolling since 1990! It’s not a position I take on lightly, particularly when I think of some of the names that have gone before me.
I’m a great believer in the club as I think it offers young people a great way to learn new skills, meet new people, stay fit and have a lot of fun, whilst at the same time performing a crucial community service –it’s the great sense of fulfilment and satisfaction I get from providing this service that keeps me coming back every year.
I think the challenge for the club is to keep young members interested and involved well in to their twenties and thirties. I will be working hard on a number of initiatives to add value to memberships and get members more involved. Competition is one area which I have only really re-entered in the last few years with the IRB racing team and in general it is something I would thoroughly recommend. It really is a lot of fun and there’s a great sense of team camaraderie and mateship which is developed at carnivals. As someone who nearly drifted out of the club at one stage, I’d have to agree with the old adage – the more you put in, the more you get out of it.
To younger members I would urge you to have a say about the direction of your surf club. If there is something you don’t like about the club or something you would like to change, then give me a call and let’s see if we can find a role for you on the committee or on one of the sub committees. More than anything I would be interested in your thoughts – I will listen!
Anyway I’m looking forward to a great season, which is now starting to fall in place. Caroline Burton and James Carew have been working hard preparing for Bronze Camp as well as a number of other training courses. There will be a focus this year on up skilling our membership base. The days of simply having your bronze are long gone and its now time we set a new benchmark where there are a number of ARC holders, IRB crew and IRB drivers in each patrol.
There are plenty of activities happening this season which will be reported throughout the rest of this Mower but I must stress the following few dates.
- Golf Day – Sat 29 November Lorne Country Club
- Lorne Requal – 10am Sun 30 November @ the Club House
- Door Knock - Thu 1 January @ the Club House
- Pier to Pub - 7am Sat 10 January @ the Club House - All members must attend
The other requal dates are still being finalised. We will send out a confirmed list as soon as it becomes available. Also, I will be meeting with the Patrol Captains in October to confirm the patrol dates for the season. Hopefully we will have these out to you by the end of that month.
I hope you all have a wonderful season and I am sure that I will catch up with most of you at some stage throughout the summer.
If anyone has any concerns, queries or suggestions, please do not hesitate to call me on 0400 938 707.
Be vigilant, but make sure you enjoy it!
Richard Knight
Hi To All,
I would like to thank the more than 50% of members who have paid their membership fees and returned their Membership Application Forms for the 2008 - 2009 season.
A few members have paid and not returned their forms, I would like to remind you that it is a requirement of Surf Life Saving Australia that ALL members sign and return the Membership Application Forms to ensure you are covered by SLSA’s insurance policy.
To those members who are not yet financial could you please get your payments (and Forms!) to me as soon as possible, so that your key-tag can be reactivated before the busy summer period.
REQUALIFICATION: I would like to remind Active members that they must be financial and have completed the Membership Form PRIOR to requalification.
A credit card payment slip is attached to this Mower. Also, if you need replacement Membership Application Forms please contact me.
Regards,
Barry Leek
What an exciting year this season has been for the Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club, especially for the ever developing junior program. It has been noted and identified through meetings with our competition areas that the club is slowly implementing changes to improve and support the transition from nipper level to junior and open competition. The changes help guide the nippers within the junior program through to the open and senior competition level.
Ian Stewart was once again instrumental in organizing the nippers program. With great support from the “volunteer” nipper parents, Ian and his crew are encouraging and building a strong nippers program. The dedication from Ian and the parents enable the kids to do many training sessions, even through the colder winter months. The club looks to be winning the battle in retaining these nippers as members, creating a strong membership base. Ian, many thanks for your fantastic efforts in nurturing the nipper program.
Special mention to the three young guys at the Open Victorian titles for their 3rd place in the open surf teams. Considering they decided to race just before the gun went off to start the race, it was a marvelous effort!! Well done guys with your dedication you have a bright future ahead and hopefully your success will inspire other junior team members to compete in the open competitions.
I would also like to thank the young kids that put their hands up to conduct the Cadets program with guidance from Karl Russell.
Now that we have implemented a structured program for next year, this program should be more exciting and fun. With assistance from new bronzies and the input from chief instructor, Caz Burton.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone that have helped me throughout the season and given me advice in my new role. At the end of the day we are all striving to achieve the same goals and provide a safe and enjoyable experience to our young members of the club.
Keep an eye out in the Lorne Mower for some training sessions starting early October.
See you all next season on the beach.
Tristan Read
Junior club captain 2007-2008
I’m please to say that despite the winter chill in the water at the moment, we currently have 4 crews already on the water training.
Lorne is still looking to build a successful U/19 and U/23 section within its boat fraternity for the upcoming 2008-09 season. Having established itself as having one of the deepest boat sections in the country with a strong representation in every event last season except the U/19 division, it would be great for Lorne to have a U/19 crew to compliment the rest of the Lorne boat crews and also gain an entry into the “Boat Relay” which is now a nationally recognised event.
With our state champion U/23 crews moving into the open ranks this season, we also have an opening for U/23 crews.
If any of you have rowed at a school level and want to try surfboats, or simply know someone who would like to be part of the team (no rowing experience essential), please contact Daniel Mugavin on 0409963449 or mugo41@hotmail.com
Competitors must be at least 16 years of age, or turning 16 before the commencement of the upcoming 2008-09 season (end of October).

Greetings all
Just a brief update to let all club members know what is happening with the years nib Lorne Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf. After last years frantic sell out of the nib Lorne Pier to Pub we have tweaked the model a little and for the 2009 swim we are having a ballot.
The way that this will operate is the for the first two weeks of entries being open swimmers can register for a ballot for the Pier to Pub. If you are a Shark Bait member then during this time you can enter and pay for a place. Runners can enter and pay for places from opening day until the nib Lorne Mountain to Surf sells out.
After the ballot registration ends there will be a weekend closure whilst we complete the ballot draw. All swimmers who have registered will go into a random draw. Successful ballottees will be able to enter the swim and pay for a place, and those who are unsuccessful will be placed into the waiting list. Entries in the waiting list will be in ballot order. All ballottees will get sent an email telling them of their status.
Successful ballottes will have two weeks to complete their entry, and pay for their place. If you don't enter and pay in this two weeks your place will be lost. After two weeks any unsold places will be allocated to those on the waiting list.
Just a reminder all active members must patrol on the day of the nib Lorne Pier to Pub. Swimming in the Pier to Pub is only possible if the permission of the committee has been sought in advance.
For an up to date timetable of when entries will open please refer to the website
Please help the committee by telling all of your swimming friends to get their details up to date on the clubs event system race.lornesurfclub.com.au/Logon
All active members who are required to renew their bronze medallion and other relevant awards must attend one of the states requalification days before December 31st, 2008.
All the other clubs requal dates are still to be confirmed, but we can confirm that the Lorne Requal Day will be held on November 30th, 2008 at the surf club starting from 9am (day after Lorne SLSC Golf Day).
If you have any questions regarding requalifying your awards or obtaining additional awards, please contact your respective patrol captains.
Please note: All competitors competing at the Bancoora carnival will not be able to do the requal at Lorne as it falls on the same day. Alternative requal days at other clubs along the surfcoast will be posted as soon as we are notified.
The annual Lorne SLSC Golf Day is to be held on November 29th this year at the Lorne Country Club, situated in the picturesque hills of Lorne overlooking the ocean.
Similar to previous years, this years competition will be “Ambrose”, played in teams of four (4).
This is a fantastic social day that enables everyone to get together in light hearted competition, and also a great day for any new competitors to mingle with their new team mates. Entries are open to everybody.
- Lots of quality prizes and raffles to be won!
- Drinks available all day and into the evening
- Trophy presentation afterwards in the Lorne Country Club clubhouse (before dinner)
- All green fees are kindly donated to the surf club
